The Context

One Car. Two Generations. A Real Decision.

Jaguar facelifted the F-Type for 2021 — new face, new interior technology, revised dynamics. It was the most significant update in the car's 11-year production run. But it also removed the manual gearbox option, simplified the engine lineup, and divided opinion on the styling.

The result is two genuinely different buying propositions. The pre-facelift (2013–MY2020) is the purer driver’s car — available with a manual, available with hydraulic steering on 2013–2015 cars, and typically £5,000–£10,000 cheaper for equivalent specification. The facelift (MY2021–2024) is the more modern car — Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, and the final 575 hp R model.

Neither is objectively better. The right choice depends on what you value. This guide documents every difference so you can make the decision with complete information.

Important: The 2020 Registration Overlap

A car registered or sold in calendar year 2020 could be either generation. Jaguar revealed the facelift in December 2019 and it went on sale mid-2020 as a MY2021 vehicle. A MY2020 car has the old face (vertical headlights, analogue cluster). A MY2021 car has the new face (slim horizontal LEDs, 12.3" digital cluster). Check the headlights — do not rely on the registration year alone.

The Styling Divide

The Headlights Changed Everything

Pre-facelift F-Type exterior
Pre-Facelift
Vertical LED headlights — distinctive, polarising
The original headlights — tall, narrow, vertical LED units — were unlike anything else on the road. Designed by Ian Callum, they gave the F-Type a face that was unmistakably its own. Many owners consider them the defining feature of the car. They were also the most common complaint from buyers who found them too unusual.
2021+ facelift F-Type exterior
Facelift (2021+)
Slim horizontal LEDs — wider, more aggressive
The 2021 redesign replaced the vertical units with slim horizontal LED strips, a wider grille, and a revised clamshell hood. The result is a more assertive, more modern face — but one that draws comparisons to the Mustang and other mainstream sports cars. The rear and flanks are unchanged from 2013.
Owner Sentiment: Forum data suggests approximately 60% of existing owners prefer the original pre-facelift design, with the vertical headlights cited most often. Among buyers who had not previously owned an F-Type, opinion is more evenly split. Neither position is wrong — this is a genuine aesthetic preference, not an objective quality difference.
Interior Technology

The Cabin Is Where the Gap Is Largest

Pre-facelift F-Type interior with analogue gauges
Pre-Facelift Interior
Analogue twin dials — no CarPlay, no digital cluster
The pre-facelift cabin is driver-focused and analogue. Twin circular dials flank a central TFT display. The InControl Touch Pro system works well but has no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto — a genuine daily-use limitation that Jaguar never retrofitted. The round climate knobs and joystick gear selector remain identical on both generations.
2021+ F-Type interior with 12.3 inch digital cluster
Facelift Interior (2021+)
12.3" digital cluster + 10" touchscreen with CarPlay
The 2021 interior is a significant step forward. The 12.3-inch digital cluster is fully reconfigurable — navigation, performance data, or a classic dial layout. The 10-inch touchscreen adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Note: the F-Type did not receive Jaguar's Pivi Pro system — it runs an updated InControl Touch Pro. The core cabin architecture, including the round knobs and joystick selector, is unchanged.

Pre-Facelift Cluster
Twin analogue dials. Classic. Unambiguous.
No CarPlay. No digital display. No OTA updates. Some buyers prefer exactly this.
The Case For Pre-Facelift

What You Gain by Going Older

Manual gearbox
The only way to row your own in an F-Type. 6-speed Tremec, 2014–2019, V6 S RWD only.
Hydraulic steering (2013–2015)
The most communicative steering of any F-Type. Lost with the 2016 EPAS update.
V6 engine availability
The 3.0 supercharged V6 was dropped or reduced for 2021+. Pre-facelift has the full V6 lineup.
Lower acquisition cost
Equivalent spec typically £5,000–£10,000 cheaper. More car for the same budget.
Mature parts ecosystem
Independent specialists have more experience. More aftermarket options. Lower servicing costs.
Original Ian Callum design
Many owners consider the pre-facelift the purer, more distinctive design. Especially the vertical headlights.
The Case For Facelift

What You Gain by Going Newer

Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
Not available on any pre-facelift car. If you need it, facelift is the only option.
12.3" digital instrument cluster
Fully reconfigurable. Navigation in the cluster. Significantly more modern feel.
575 hp R model
25 hp more than the pre-facelift R. Same supercharged 5.0 V8, retuned for 2021.
Over-the-air software updates
Jaguar can push improvements post-purchase. Relevant for infotainment and minor system fixes.
Revised suspension geometry
New knuckles, larger bearings, revised upper ball joints. Marginal but documented improvement.
Final model years (2022–2024)
If owning the last F-Types ever made matters to you, only the facelift delivers that.
Decision Framework

Seven Questions That Decide It

Answer these questions honestly. The pattern of your answers will tell you which generation is right for you more reliably than any single specification comparison.

The Verdict

Which Generation to Buy

Buy Pre-Facelift If
  • You want a manual gearbox — full stop
  • Budget is the primary constraint
  • You prefer the original vertical headlight design
  • You want a V6 engine (especially the P380)
  • You value analogue gauges over digital displays
  • You're buying a 2013–2015 car for the hydraulic steering
  • You want more independent servicing options
Buy Facelift (2021+) If
  • Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is non-negotiable
  • You want the 12.3" digital instrument cluster
  • You want the final 575 hp R model
  • You prefer the 2021 front end styling
  • Owning the last F-Types ever made matters to you
  • You want over-the-air software update capability
  • You're buying a daily driver and need modern tech
Walk Away From Either Generation If
The car has no service history, the coolant system hasn't been inspected on a high-mileage example, or the seller resists a pre-purchase inspection. Generation is irrelevant if the fundamentals are wrong. The F-Type's known issues — coolant system, supercharger tensioner, differential — apply to both generations. Always inspect before you buy.
